The Pre-Entrance Military Training Experience of the Armed Forces Nursing Academy Cadets

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of cadet candidates¡¯ pre-entrance military training and to understand them from their perspective.

Methods: Participants in this study were divided into five groups that consisted of cadets who belonged to the 51¡¯st graduating class at the AFNA(The Armed Forces Nursing Academy) and who had completed pre-entrance military training in 2008. Data were collected through focus group interviews from June to July in 2008. Analysis was performed using the phenomenological method proposed by Colaizzi.

Results: The themes were classified into fifteen theme clusters. The fifteen theme clusters were finally grouped into six dimensions and they includes belongs, 1) Facing an unfamiliar situation 2) Perception of stress 3) Thoughts about the future 4) Development of supportive with personnel relations 5) Becoming change 6) Inner maturation. The results showed that cadet candidates experienced significant changes in the areas inner maturation and development of supportive relations with personnel. Both were shown to be important in overcoming difficulties during pre-entrance military training.

Conclusion: This study suggested further development of a pre-entrance military training program that contains elements geared to help cadets overcome difficulties during the first military training session and to successfully achieve the goals of training.
